PlayStation VR goes on sale next week, but for Sony this isn’t the culmination of its journey to bring virtual reality to console gamers, it is just the beginning.
Speaking to IGN, SIE Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden suggested there’ll be future generations of the PS VR headset to follow.
Layden called the imminent release “step one in a very long journey," and said Sony was “all in” on VR.
“We've put it all on the table and I like our chances,” he said.
Layden cited the PlayStation team’s 20+ years of iteration and innovation and hinted the next version of PlayStation VR is already in design.
He said: "When you deliver unit 'A,' you know 'A Prime' is already in design.
”You can look at the first generation of the product and see the future about where you want to go.”
He continued to say "there are certain technologies that we need to incorporate" and "certain technologies that don't exist yet."
So if you’re a fence-sitter when it comes to first-generation products then you can probably rest assured a new and improved headset will arrive at some point.
Meanwhile Sony has detailed almost the near-80 apps and games scheduled to arrive on PlayStation VR within the first six months of the headset going on sale.
The virtual reality headset arrives with a disc featuring 17 VR experiences (only 8 in the UK!) right out of the box on October 13. Another 40 will be available on launch day, the blog post explains.
Beyond that, 24 experiences are expected before the end of 2016, including the Star Wars: Battlefront Rogue One X-Wing experience.
Headlined by Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, eight more titles are currently scheduled for release within the first three months of 2017.
